Warwick The Rose City

"1901 to 1950"

 

At the turn of the century Warwick was making a name for it self, patronised by some of Australia's wealthiest graziers the town quickly developed, with factories establish the town was thriving. Warwick could now boast three flourmills, a butter factory which would soon be known world wild producing some of the finest butter and cheeses, taking out worldwide awards. The town had it's own brewery, a numbers of sawmills had started up and the railway had also grown with around sixty trains passing through the town per week moving over 71,200 tons (72,342.5399066 metric ton) of freight at a total revenue 102,254.00 pound ($204,508.00).
In 1917 Warwick was to change the history of Australia with the throwing of one little hen's egg at the then Prime Minister who was passing through the town at the time.
No lager gathering has ever met in Warwick the sincerity and enthusiasm was overwhelming when the Duck and Duchess of York came to town.
With the Stock market crash of 1929 and the lose of 50 billion dollars (U.S) in one day on Wall Street, it wasn't long before impact was fleet world wide plunging the world into the worse depression every recorded. Warwick along with the rest of Australia would soon feel the effects of the after shocks of the Wall Street crash, as the great depression of the 1930's (as it would be known) soon took it's toll world wide.
Warwick woke on September 4, 1939, to the news that a state of war exists between Britain and German. With the invent of war in 1940, the Aussie rallied to good of old Mother England, and young men where signing up everywhere it wasn't long before Warwick became part of the war effort, the Showgrounds was to become known as tent city.
On August 16, 1946 Warwick went wild, news at 9am told that the Japan had surrendered unconditionally sending the town it into a hysterical outburst of jubilation.
The 1950's Warwick gets its first Olympic swimming pool.

 

New Ambulance Station
In February 1900 a committee was formed to provide Warwick with its' own ambulance service, a subscription had been taken up to pay for an Ashford litter, (a stretcher on wheels).

The Dairy Industry
Security for the Warwick dairy industry was established on October 9 1901 when a meeting was held in the town hall, Warwick, to consider ways and means of establishing a butter factory in the town.....
December 1 1903 the first consignment of butter was shipped on the 'Miltiades'..... With one box through the courtesy of the Earl of Warwick was sent to the Mayor and councilors of the city of Warwick, England.
